Culture Shock: Shilin Night Market

Culture shock hit us last night when we went to the Shilin Night Market. The people, the food, the size of the night market – it all sort of overwhelmed us. I think we had this impression that the vendors would be selling souvenirs, handmade items or trinkets that we could take home as gifts. But the areas we walked through at this night market had mostly clothes, shoes, and other accessories for sale. We had hoped to sample some of the street vendor food while we were there, but the smells of the food stalls just overwhelmed our senses and my stomach was just a little too queasy to try anything. We arrived early at the night market (about 5:30-6:00pm) just after it opened. We watched as hundreds, if not thousands of people, poured out of the MRT (subway) and buses and filled the narrow streets of the market. It was an incredible sight.

We ate at a place with little baskets like that in the second from last photo and really liked it, but didn’t like the looooooong line waiting our turn for our food to be fried. Isn’t it amazing how cheap food vendor food is, though? I guess I want to compare it to the closest thing we have… fair food, which is horribly overpriced. Aw… you couldn’t convince yourself to get a nice big piece of stinky tofu? (giggle) Doesn’t it make you want to cook up some of that in your own kitchen and have the smell permeate the house?

Shilin is like the king of all night markets. Perhaps the most crowded one in all of Taiwan even. I didn’t go there till I’d been in Taiwan for 3-4 years (since I live in the south) and it overwhelmed even me a veteran night market goer.

Not all night markets are quite like that. 🙂 Some, but not most. Hope you get the chance to go to a smaller, not quite so overwhelming one while you are here.
