Q: Why did you choose to adopt from Taiwan?

A: We first considered Guatemala, but because of the instability of the program, we started looking elsewhere. We looked at many countries and their requirements. We like Taiwan for several reasons, including the overall health of the children, the time required in the country to complete the adoption and the possibility that some of our child’s medical history may be available from the birthmother.

The child we will be adopting will likely be cared for at St. Lucy’s Orphanage in Tainan, Taiwan. We have heard wonderful things about this orphanage from other adoptive parents. The website for St. Lucy’s is not completely current – for instance, the orphanage recently moved to a new facility – but you can get an idea of what the orphanage is like by visiting their site:

Taiwan requires adoptive parents to spend only about a week in the country to complete the adoption. Some other countries require a significantly longer stay. We are excited to visit Taiwan – we have heard that it is a beautiful country.

Q: How long is the process?

A: The current estimate for a boy or a girl is 12-18 months for a referral. After we accept a referral of a child, it will take 4-6 months for the adoption paperwork to be filed and processed by the Taiwanese courts. We will travel to pick up our child once the courts have issued a final decree in favor of adoption.

Q: How old will your child be when he or she comes home?

A: We have requested an infant boy or girl. Our hope is that our child will be 8-10 months old when we bring him or her home.
